Since the age of thirteen, I have worked and worked hard. I grew up helping out in the Dove public house in Poringland which was run by my family. As soon as I was old enough, I took a part-time job working for a well-respected local butcher getting up at 5 am to cram in a shift before school to earn my own money. In 1996, I was offered the opportunity to work in car sales for Hammond Land Rover, Halesworth.
Progressing from my first job as a sales executive through to becoming a senior manager I enjoyed helping people attain freedom and the lifestyle they aspired to through cars. My career in the motor industry spanned 20 years. I have always enjoyed working for family-run, local businesses that shared my personal values of an honest hard days work and putting people at the heart of everything you do.
I’d long held an ambition that one day I would work for myself and at the milestone birthday of turning 40, I felt the time had come to turn one day into day one. After much research and planning, I set up MD Wealth Management.
Why financial services?
Finance was a large part of my career in the Motor Trade and I’d always enjoyed and excelled in that aspect of my work. I’m someone who likes data, analysis, detail and I find the macro-environment fascinating so financial services naturally appealed to me but I felt I could deliver it in a way that was more real, more human, more me basically.
Changing careers is a very scary concept. My career had always been built on personal reputation so credibility was my top priority. I chose to study and become an Associate Partner Practice of St. James's Place Wealth Management, a prestigious British FTSE 100 company which guarantees the suitability of the advice given by its members.
What followed was many hours of studying, training, observed mentoring, exams and assessments. None of it is easy but I’m a naturally curious person and I’ve actually learned to love learning. The requirement to continuously update my knowledge, skills and qualifications is really rewarding. Qualifying and establishing MD Wealth Management is one of the life accomplishments I am most proud of.
Who needs a wealth manager?
In my experience, many people put off organising their finances because they are unsure of what to do and who to trust for advice. Most people simply don't believe they are wealthy enough to need good advice. They, therefore, leave themselves unnecessarily exposed to financial risk or fail to make their money work fully for them.
Actually, most people really could benefit from some sound financial planning advice. For example, do you own a property or run your own business? Have you discussed with a spouse how much of your child's university education you plan to fund? Does a serious illness run in your family? Have your parents saved enough for retirement or do they have concerns about inheritance matters? All of these things will determine how much you need to save—when and how.
Reaching the future level of wealth you desire, in the time-frame you wish, may well depend on getting great advice early on.
